Triunfo to invest US$ 1 billion in multipurpose complex in Santos

Valor Econômico

Triunfo Participações e Investimentos will erect a private multi-purpose complex of three terminals in the area it has in the port of Santos, in the Santa Rita ranch. With a total investment of R$ 1.6 billion (US$ 1 billion), the undertaking will be made up of a terminal to operate solid bulk cargo (with static capacity for 2 million tons/year), one for liquids (4.5 million tons/year) and one exclusive for containers operated in the coastal shipping.

The latter aims at providing more synergy to the operations of the newly-launched shipping company of the group, Maestra Navegação e Logística. They expect when their four ships are in operation - what should occur until the second half - Maestra operates between 60 and 70 thousand TEUs a year. The terminal dedicated to cargo in containers will capacity to operate up to 140 thousand TEUs.

Since the decision bets on an exclusive structure for the coastal shipping it is also a means for Triunfo not to directly face the container terminals of public use that already fight for the long-distance market in the port of Santos. And it caters to a niche that is less valued at times of peak of operations - the container used in the coastal shipping does not pay as much as the that of the foreign commerce, mainly that of imports, which stay longer in the terminal and pays for storage.

The access to the terminal may take place primarily by rail - the branch of the concessionaire MRS cuts the ground - and by a system of pipelines that already exists to supply the liquid terminals of the left margin of the port. The trucks will get there through the Cônego Domenico Rangoni road, the old Piaçaguera-Guarujá, which is also where they run when the destination are the facilities of the left margin. The project also foresees dredging in the region of largo de Santa Rita, to 16 meters. Nearly 10 million cubic meters of sediments will be removed and used on the ground of the terminal. Should everything goes as expected by the entrepreneur, the works will take between 36 and 42 months. During the construction, the expectation is that 10 thousand jobs be generated. Once in operation, 1.2 thousand direct jobs will be created.

Today, the Triunfo holding controls road concessions, private port (Portonave, SC) and a power plant. In 2010, the group registered profits of R$ 33.9 million (US$ 19.3 million), reduction of 25% compared to R$ 45.2 million of the previous year. In the last quarter of last year, the company had net income of R$ 17.1 million (US$ 9.7 million), an increase of 40.4% compared to the same period of 2009. Among the main aspects that impacted on the result the highlight was the growth of the earnings of the port segment.
