TIM buys intelig and makes ‘relaunch’

Valor Econômico - 03/02/2009

TIM closed, on Friday night, the purchase of Intelig, a few hours after announcing to the market a ‘relaunching' plan of the company. The measures are the bet of the telephone operator to leave behind the bad times it faced last year, when it lost the second place in the market to Claro and faced the fall in some financial indexes. The acquisition of Intelig, which belonged to Docas Investimentos, provides TIM a new profile. With the deal, closed for a non-disclosed amount, the operator increases its data transmission capacity to operate as an internet access provider and gains structure in the metropolitan areas where the traffic is increasing.  The purchase suits the "relaunching" proposal designed by the new Executive Board of TIM. The offer of new packages of services combining conventional and mobile telephone and internet, is one of the pillars of these measures that also include the repositioning of the trademark and greater efficiency in the use of the network. "Tim lost competitiveness and that led to a fall in our market share", affirmed Luca Luciani who took over the chairmanship of the operator this year. "However, TIM has strong grounds which will be important in the relaunching strategy of the company", said the officer who held teleconferences with journalists and analysts in order to comment the 2008 results, and present the "relaunching plan" of the company. In the undertaking, TIM defined classes A and B as its priority target. The measure emphasizes the return of the operator to the strategy of focusing its fire to attract and maintain the most profitable clients - model which was the base of its success some years ago.
