Supermarket sales grow 6%

The supermarkets registered increase of 6.66% in the sales in July, compared to the same month of 2008, according data of the Abras (Brazilian Association of Supermarkets). Compared to June this year, the increase reached 5.66%. In the accumulated of the first seven months of 2009, compared to the same period of the previous year, the growth reached 5.47%. The indexes have already undergone deflation by the IPCA (Extended Consumer Price Index) of the IBGE. "The increase shows the Brazilian people continues prioritizing the purchase of food", says the president of Abras, Sussumu Honda.
In July, the AbrasMercado, a basket with 35 products of great consumption analyzed by GfK presented a 0.93% price increase in relation to the previous month. Compared to July 2008, the AbrasMercado presented price increase of 4.44%, going from R$ 256.62 (US$ 140.2) to R$ 268.02 (US$ 141.1). The products with the highest increases were: second quality beef, 8.02%; mozzarella cheese, 5.68%; and beans, 4.75%. Nonetheless, the main falls in price were: potato, -12.85%; tomato, - 8.99%; and rice, - 4.53%.
