Stock Exchange Turnover to surpass by 50% the Country’s wealth until December

DCI - 11/08/2007

The volume operated by the São Paulo Stock Exchange (Bovespa), which had activities of R$ 956.8 billion (US$ 551.8 billion) from January to October / 2007, moves towards representing more than 50% of the Country's Gross Domestic Product (GDP) until the end of the year, say market specialists. According to the analysts, the performance of the stock exchange has been much superior to the growth of the GDP - balance of the wealth produced in the Country -, and the sum of the external and internal indexes converges towards an increasingly more representative participation of the trading of stocks in the national economy in a short period of time. According to the Brazilian Institute of Geography and Statistics (IBGE), the national GDP consolidated R$ 1.226 trillion (US$ 707 billion) from January to June / 2007, which is the equivalent to an increase of R$ 120 billion (US$ 69.2 billion) over the R$ 1.106 trillion (US$ 637.8 billion) seen in the same period of 2006. The growth of the volume of the transactions of the stock exchange was 52.2 percentile points (p.p.) greater than the increase of the GDP, for the same period of time. The traded value in stock exchange in the first half of 2007 was equivalent to 40% of the GDP in the period. The market projection is that the GDP reaches more than R$ 2 trillions (US$ 1.15 trillions) at the end of the year, and also that the stock exchange is the stage of R$ 1.3 trillion (US$ 651.6 billion) in financial operations.
