SP leads in production, employment and retail

O Estado de S. Paulo - 09/04/2008

São Paulo's economy is driving all the good national indicators. In the case of industrialist production, the São Paulo growth in the first half was 56% over the national average, the highest gap between the expansion in the State and the Country's average in the Brazilian Institute of Geography and Statistics (IBGE)'s survey since the beginning of the series, in 1992. The São Paulo data are also above average in the metropolitan employees, in industrial employment and in retail commerce. The São Paulo economic diversity, the improvement of the salary mass and the fact that the State is prominent in the sectors that drive the national industry are the main reasons pointed for the Region's leadership in the Brazilian growth. In the industry, while the average of growth in Brazil was 6.3 % in the first half, São Paulo reached 9.8%. Today, IBGE will release the regional data of the industry in July, which should confirm the trend of expansion of the State. From January to July, the main positive impacts in the São Paulo industry's results were automotive vehicles and machinery and equipment - durable goods and capital goods, which are leading the industrial growth in the Country. Economist of the National Confederation of the Industry (CNI), Paulo Mol, agrees that one sectorial review of the industrial performance is the way to understand São Paulo's strong leadership in 2008. In retail, while the country's sale growth was 10.6%, on the average, in the first semester, the expansion in São Paulo reached 14.3%. Economic advisor of Fecomércio-SP, Altamir Carvalho, explains that "the determining variable" for this performance is income. In June, the salary mass of the six metropolitan regions researched by IBGE grew 8.2 %, and in São Paulo, 10.7%. According to the technician of the Services and Commerce Coordination of IBGE, Nilo Lopes, São Paulo retail corresponds to 35% of the sales in the Country and has been benefited by the industry.
