São Paulo industry moves 10.6% up and pushes up the country
Folha de S. Paulo - 06/06/2008
The largest and most diversified industry of the country, the industry of São Paulo, leads the sector growth this year and benefits from the profile of the industrial expansion, mainly leveraged by automobiles and machinery and equipment. From January to April, the production went 10.6% up in São Paulo. It was the fourth greatest regional rate - behind Espirito Santo (16.3%), Goiás (11.3%) and Pernambuco (11.2%) -, but the impact of the industry of São Paulo in the sector as a whole is rather significant, according to the IBGE (Brazilian Institute of Geography and Statistics). The State is responsible for nearly 40% of the entire production of the country. In April, the industry went through an accommodation and the production grew only in 6 of the 14 surveyed areas, in the index free of seasonal effects compared to March - in that month, the expansion reached eight areas. Once again, São Paulo stood out with a 0.6% increment over March. There was an advance of 14.9% in the State compared to April/2007. "São Paulo has registered results above the national average, and sometimes, at two-digit rates. What happens is that sectors with good performance highly influence the industry of São Paulo. The main examples are the industries of cars and machines", says André Macedo, economist of the IBGE.
