O Estado de S. Paulo - 01/12/2008

Were it a country, the municipality of São Paulo would be among the 50 biggest economies of the world, according to the wealth it produces. It would take the 47th place and be ahead of Egypt and Kuwait. That is what reveals a comparative analysis on the economical potential of the capital, carried out by the São Paulo State Trade Federation (Fecomércio-SP) for the commemoration of the city's 454th anniversary. The municipality's Gross Domestic Product (GDP), US$ 102,4 billion - or R$ 263,2 billion -, according to the latest published data from 2005, is superior to those of 22 American States, among which Hawaii, Georgia, and New Hampshire, when analyzed individually. The wealth produced by the capital corresponds the almost 85% of Israel's economy. "São Paulo has a notable magnitude and potential for new businesses", says the director of the economical consulting Fernanda Della Rosa. Some survey's comparisons give the dimension of the strength of São Paulo's economy. The city's GDP is bigger than those of all Brazilian States and corresponds to 12.3% of the Brazilian GDP. The wealth produced by São Paulo corresponds to 2.5 times the GDP of the North Region, 6.5 times Ceará's GDP, and 94% of the sum of the GDP of all States that form the Northeast Region. The city's GDP corresponds to more than 14% of the whole South America's, except Brazil.
