Santos to receive investments of US$ 2.81 billion for expansion
DCI
The Port of Santos, the largest of the Country and managed by Companhia Docas do Estado de São Paulo (Codesp), has projects of expansion and improvement in infrastructure that, together, amount to nearly R$ 5.2 billion (US$ 2.81 billion) in investments, divided between the private initiative and the government. Not including the "new port (novo porto)" plan, for the region referred to as Barnabé Bagres, currently object of a feasibility study by three groups and that should be budgeted until the end of September.
The relevance of these investments can be seen in the survey of potential of growth in the Port of Santos, which is underway, in partnership with the Inter-American of Development Bank (IDB), and foresees that the unit has conditions to leap from the current more than 80 million tons operated, to almost 230 million in 2024 - considering a pessimistic setting, this figure should remain at 130 million.
In relation to the measures of expansion in progress in the docks of Santos, the executive listed works like the perimeter avenues, which amount to more than R$ 500 million (US$ 270.3 million), the performance of the dredging (deepening) and removal of rocks in the port canal, which should consume more than R$ 340 million (US$ 183.8 million) within the next years - these made through public investments. But there are heavy investments planned by the private initiative, like the R$ 1.6 billion (US$ 864.7 million) of Brasil Terminal Portuário (BTP), of the Europe Terminal, and the R$ 1.2 million (US$ 648.6 million) which should be injected by Embraport, of the Coimex Group, among other projects in progress.
On the other hand, the positive outcome of the entire development of the Port of Santos also depends upon the development of the new rules which are being debated to be implemented in the sector, like the new rules of concession of terminals and on the progress of the public initiatives. Another point is the final presentation of the plan of expansion of the port that will have a restructuring proposal of Codesp (the state company responsible for the management of the port) which may even lead to an IPO. The work is made by The Louis Berger Group and Internave Engenharia, winners in a public tender held by the IDB.
