Samsung installs a research center inside Unicamp

Samsung is installing a laboratory inside the State University of Campinas (Unicamp) to develop projects of mobile computer platforms in partnership with the institution — these are projects of collaborative research in which the global leader in consumer electronic products and digital convergence is expecting to generate innovations to be incorporated in future products. The amount of the investments was not disclosed. This is the second collaborative laboratory installed inside the university in the last month — the other was the Mix of Research in Genomics Applied to Climate Changes (Umip GenClima) in a partnership with Embrapa. The next laboratory may be with the multinational company Chevron, which has been in touch with the university in order to set such partnership. The company wants to take advantage from the Unicamp’s knowledge in the area of oil, but especially focused on the prospection.
The laboratory of the Korean company was inaugurated last Friday at the Inovasoft building, the Innovation Software Center of the university, which is dedicated to the interaction both with public and private organizations in partnership projects in the information technology (TI) area. According to the executive director for the Unicamp’s Innovation Agency Inova, Roberto Lotufo, the construction of the laboratory inside the academic environment is positive to the development of innovative researches. Collaboration agreements between IC and Samsung Eletrônica da Amazônia were intermediated by the Innovation Agency Inova Unicamp.
According to the consultant, Unicamp was chosen by Samsung for such partnership because it is considered one of the most important universities in the country, recognized for its excellence in research and its tradition in innovation. According to Lotufo, the Innovation Agency supports and stimulates the researchers’ interest in performing collaborative projects with the purpose to generate benefits to the society. “The purpose of the University is to accomplish Research and Development (P&D, in Portuguese) projects in partnership with companies in order to allow the results of the researches with high innovative potential may be available to the society in the form of new processes, products or services” , he has asserted.
University is already articulating an expansion
The arrival of the research labs from multinational companies at the State University of Campinas (Unicamp) has already made the institution to articulate expansion projects for its Scientific Park, and it expects the state government to expropriate an area of 1.43 million sqm next to the campus and inside the high technology pole of Ciatec 2 in order to attract new research projects focused on the innovation. The resources to pay the area will be provided by Unicamp, which has already attained the authorization from the Council of the University dispose R$ 150 million (US$ 73.2 million) to acquire the land.
