Sales of Carrefour grow 36% in Brazil and 6.3% in the world

The sales of the French retailer Carrefour in Brazil, in the second quarter, amounted to € 3.024 billion, which represents growth of 36.1% compared to the same period in 2009. In constant currency, the increase was of 10.1% and, according to the concept of same stores, there was an increase of 2.9%.  The French chain informed Atacadão significantly contributed for the growth of the sales, with a two-digit increase according to the criterion of same stores in the quarter.  "In an adverse environment, we were able to register solid sales in the first half, with gains in the market share in France, strong growth in Latin America and faster advance in Asia", declared the President of Carrefour, Lars Olofsson, on a note.

The highlights in growth take place in Asia and Latin America, where the sales increased 21.4% and 34.1%, respectively (9.3% and 13.1%, in constant currency).  In France, the headquarters and main market of the company, the sales increased 2.7%, to € 10.414 billion.  The consolidated world sales of Carrefour amounted to € 24.9 billion in the second quarter, a 6.3% increase compared to the same period last year, considering the effects of the exchange rate of the currencies in which the chain operates.  If the exchange rate effect is disregarded, the expansion was 0.8% in the period.  In the aggregate in the first half, the world sales amounted to € 48.9 billion, with an increase of 5.9% (progress of 1.5% in constant currency).

According to the French retailer, its performance in Europe was negatively affected by the fall in the sales in Spain and also by the strikes in Belgium after the company announced the restructuring of its operations in the country.  The sales in Europe decreased 2.9% this quarter, and only in Belgium, the fall was 8.9%, and in Spain it achieved 5.5%.
