Rio+20: State of São Paulo will have the first remanufacturing production of Caterpillar in South America

With the use of sustainable technology, the company will extend the useful life of engine components

Investe São Paulo and Caterpillar signed this Tuesday, June 19, a memorandum of intent for the future production of remanufactured parts in the State of São Paulo. The agreement was signed at an event at the Rio+20, in the presence of the governor Geraldo Alckmin.

“Caterpillar is showing its commitment to post-consumption, saving energy, water and other natural resources. It is a commitment to the environment and people,” said Alckmin.

The new manufacturing process will be dedicated to the remanufacturing of engine components. “This is one of the most important contributions of Caterpillar to sustainable development, as it extends the useful life of non-renewable resources,” said the president of Caterpillar Brazil and Country Manager, Luiz Carlos Calil. This will be first remanufacturing operation of Caterpillar in South America, and will rely on the technology called CAT Reman. The Reman process is very important for the environment, because it returns to the components used their original condition, thus being fully in line with the government policies for the disposal of solid waste and post-consumption responsibility.

For the president of Investe SP, Luciano Almeida, São Paulo’s position in the Brazilian green economy market qualifies the State as a premier destination for such investment. “Remanufacturing is still a new technology in Brazil. São Paulo leads the way and consistently seeks to attract this sector,” he said. “It’s great to be here at the Rio+20 and be able to announce this investment. Now that’s sustainable development,” he concluded.

The State has the largest green economy market of the country and also the most diverse. There are 141,000 companies operating in the sector, employing over one million green jobs in Brazil.

The remanufacturing process consists in returning a component that is at the end of its useful life to the condition of new, in a remanufacturing environment. This means that the component will be used unmounted, go through a cleaning process, inspection, recovery, addition of new and original parts, assembly and testing, maintaining the specifications, quality, processes and original manufacturer’s warranty.

Remanufactured products reduce operating costs in the field, while enhancing their availability for the equipment operation. Furthermore, the remanufactured component can cost 40% less than the new one, providing the same reliability, quality and performance. The advantage for the environment is the reduction in the production process of up to 99% of energy, 90% of water, 85% of raw materials and 99% less waste.

Leadership in green economy
The State of São Paulo was the first region of Brazil to incorporate the green economy issue in its political and business agenda. Creating cutting edge laws, the State was a pioneer in the regulation of issues such as solid waste (State Law No. 12300/2006) and climate changes (State Law No. 13798/2009). Both provide opportunities for prospecting new business, since they create specific demands, such as the need to invest in sustainable transportation.

With the profile of a low carbon economy, it is the State with the cleanest energy matrix of Brazil, with a 55% share of renewable sources. São Paulo is also the largest producer in the world and the largest domestic producer of ethanol from sugarcane, accounting for 56% of the production in the country.

On June 05, 2012, the Strategy for Sustainable Development of the State of São Paulo was launched (Decree No. 58107), aiming to establish an agenda for the sustainable development of the State, presenting sectoral goals that will define the State Government action up to 2020.
