Retail should sell 12% more this Christmas in SP

The retail sales in the Metropolitan Region of São Paulo for Christmas should register growth of 12% compared to the same period of last year, according to the Federation of Commerce of the State of São Paulo (Fecomercio-SP). The growth should be driven by the sale of home appliances and electric and electronic devices, which should grow 27%, influenced by reduction in the IPI (Excise Tax) for the white line. Nonetheless, the segment should register a 2% fall in the year due to poor performance in the first half (-13%).
The perfume sector should register growth of 18% in December and close the year with a 12% expansion. Until October, the performance of the items is the best of the retail, with growth of 11.1%. With the increase in Christmas, the entity foresees the real earnings of the retail may end 2009 with a growth of 4% compared to last year. The data consolidated until October shows real growth in sales of 1.9% compared to the same period of last year. In October, sales grew 7.6% compared to the same month of 2008.
For 2010, the survey made by Fecomercio points to real growth of 8% in the "optimistic" scenario. In the case of the "probable" scenario, the expansion should be 6%, and in the "pessimistic" projection, the segment should grow just 1%. In the survey taking Brazil as whole, the forecast is that the earnings grow 9% this year, compared to 2008. For 2010, the "optimistic" scenario points to growth of 10%, 8% in the "likely" scenario, and 5% in the "pessimistic" one.
