Petrobras announces a new mega well in the pre-salt

Valor Econômico - 09/11/2008

Yesterday Petrobras announced a new discovery of light oil in large dimensions in the pre-salt reservoirs, in ultra-deep waters. The new accumulation, together with Tupi, may double the current proven Brazilian reserves of 14 billion barrels. According to a material fact issued by the state-owned company, the consortium formed by Petrobras, BG and Galo Energia concluded the drilling of a well in the accumulation called Iara, in the Santos Basin, and proved a "relevant discovery", according to the company's notice. The estimate informed is of a reclaimed volume among 3 billion and 4 billion light oil barrels and natural gas inside that area, situated in the BM-S-11 block, the same one where the Tupi accumulation is. Iara is the second pre-salt reservoir in which Petrobras makes reserves estimates. Last year, the company announced that Tupi has a reclaimed volume among 5 billion and 8 billion of light oil barrels and natural gas. Together, the reservoirs may get to 12 billions of barrels. On account of that, the discovery practically doubles the size of the proven Brazilian reserves, in the valuation of consultant John Forman. Forman was the director of the National Oil Agency (ANP).
