Paper sector should export more and grow with China

Folha de S. Paulo - 12/12/2007

The companies that produce cellulose in Brazil have not suffered with two factors that usually have an adverse effect on the industry: the devaluated Dollar and China. The sector may close the year with US$ 3 billion in exportation, an increase of 20.8% in sales in relation to 2006. What supports the profits is the Chinese demand, which kept the prices of cellulose heated throughout the year. In the area of paper, the external sales have grown 8.5%, with US$ 1.7 billion. Elizabeth de Carvalhaes, president of Bracelpa (Brazilian Association of Cellulose and Paper), explains that the sector knew how to take advantage of search of China for cellulose to gain market. "From our planning of US$ 14.4 billion in investments until 2012, we have already invested US$ 6.5 billion. With the improvement of technology, we will reach a production of 17.5 million tons of cellulose a year ".
