Opposite to the crisis, Tortuga announces acquisition of the PCS Fosfatos
Gazeta Mercantil - 10/02/2008
PCS Fosfatos do Brasil's assets are in the hands of Tortuga Companhia Zootécnica Agrária, Brazilian leader in the sector of mineral supplements. With the acquisition, the company integrates micro granulated phosphate and a small dose of mitsuisal to its line of products, meeting at least part of the demand for this mineral nutrient. Tortuga already produces bicalcium, another of the ingredients of the nutritional composite that it commercializes. The announcement was made almost one month after the conclusion of the negotiations, which started still in 2007, without the official figures of the transaction being revealed. But analysts of the sector calculate that Tortuga must have disbursed nearly R$ 90 million (US$ 46.9 million) to be able to hear the final bang of the gavel. What the president of the company Max Fabiani reveals is that the amount, whatever may it be, "was paid with its own capital". In 2008, the company had destined another R$ 40 million (US$ 20.8 million) to investments. Tortuga's capacity of production of bicalcium phosphate, an ingredient used in the formulation of 150 nutrition products, is 20 thousand tons per month. The production of micro granulated phosphate of the already incorporated PCS Company should add 100 thousand tons at the end of each year. The total volume of the company's monthly production was 45 thousand tons until the acquisition. From now on, this number will leap to 55 thousand tons. Last year, Tortuga's revenue was R$ 532.8 million (US$ 276.1 million), 17% bigger than in 2006. In the same year of 2007, the company saw the value of exportations grow 265% compared to the previous year. With 100% national capital, the company works in 17 countries and has two units in Paraguay and one in Uruguay, besides 14 units of sales and nine distribution centers in the Brazilian territory. Installed in Mairinque, in the interior of the state of São Paulo, Tortuga's division of animal nutrition is the biggest plant of mineral supplements in the world. It was the only one with this flag until then, but it will no longer be alone after the take-over of the PCS units and the end of the construction of a plant in Fortaleza.
