Novo Gol boosts Taubaté

The economy of Taubaté, in Vale do Paraíba, felt the impact of the launch of
Novo Gol, the newly-launched Volkswagen product. The maker that has a plant in the city has generated 1.2 thousand jobs since May, 2007, from the beginning of the project so far. From them, nearly 300 jobs were generated this year. It helped the city to reach a surplus of 3.7 thousand new jobs between July 2007 and 2008 and occupy the position of the 36
th greatest employer of the Country in the period. The evolution of the employment indexes in Taubaté represented an increase of 170% in the volume verified in the same period between 2006 and 2007. The surplus in June reached 892 jobs - 430 of such new jobs were created in the industry. That assured the municipality the condition of only representative of the São Paulo Vale do Paraíba among the 50 greatest employing cities, according to the survey made by the Ministry of Labor. The Volks' investments for the production of
Novo Gol amounted to nearly R$ 1.2 billion (US$ 764.3 million), R$ 600 million (US$ 382.2 million) of which employed in manufacturing processes intended for the Taubaté plant. This unit has 5.8 thousand employees directly involved in its activities. The facilities were enlarged for this new project and went through a complete reformulation, implementing a series of technologies in its production line. The rhythm of production went from 850 cars a day produced in May, 2007, to the current 1,100. The results have already been felt in the municipal revenues. The ICMS (value-added tax) of Taubaté has already grown 8.4% this year. According to the city administration, on account of that there will be an additional income of R$ 15 million (US$ 9.6 million) next year.
