Motorola expands operations in Brazil

Valor Econômico

For the second time in six months Motorola announces it will bring to Brazil the manufacturing of another of its lines of products. According to Eduardo Stéfano, vice-president of mobility for Government and companies, the first lots of equipment that allow the distribution of wireless internet signal start leaving the company plant of Jaguariúna, interior of the state of São Paulo, in the end of the month. That is the eighth line to go into production in the plant inaugurated in 1996 - and the third only in the last 12 months.

Similarly to the other cases, the local production will meet the demand of Latin America. "Brazil will be an alternative to the Malaysian plant", says the executive. Stéfano affirms the investment to start the production of the equipment was already part of the budget foreseen for the Jaguariúna plant in 2009.

The presence in the areas of networks and mobility have become strategic for Motorola in its restructuring process. Between the tax years of 2006 and 2008, the earnings of its more traditional unit, of cell phones, fell 34.69%. Meanwhile, the sales of the areas of domestic networks and corporate mobility increased 5% and 23.9%, respectively.

The executive affirms that the main target markets for Motorola are the projects for the interconnection of areas and units of companies, the digital inclusion initiatives of the Government, and, mainly, the broad band internet connection providers.

Besides bringing new lines of products, Motorola is also dedicating itself to the customer service. According to Stéfano, a post-sale customer service team was created in the plant of Jaguariúna to provide support to products in and out the warranty period. Investing in Brazil has been a good deal for Motorola, mainly in the last two years. Among eight countries listed by Bloomberg, Brazil was the only one to present two-digit growth in the sales made between the tax years of 2006 and 2008.
