Model for airports will be available until June of 2009

Gazeta Mercantil – 11/17/2008

The definition of the model that will be adopted for the concession of the three Brazilian airports should be ready already in the first semester of next year. Civil Aviation Secretary Air Lieutenant General, Jorge Godinho Barreto Nery, affirmed that the estimate is feasible. "We will have a definition of the ideas around that date. We do not have clear definitions about the concessions themselves, but we do have of the actions", he explained. Airports Tom Jobim, in Rio de Janeiro, and Viracopos, in Campinas (SP), were already included in the Federal Government's National Program of Privatization (PND). Besides, the third terminal of São Paulo, which is still in the stage of analysis by the government, should also be included in the concession process. The proposal is that the third airport of São Paulo should already be built as a concession. According to Lieutenant General Nery, there are no obstacles to the formulation of this future model. Anac's superintendent of airport infrastructure, Anderson Ribeiro Correia, said that the concession model adopted by the government should take into account the whole airport structure of the Country. "We should not look only at the interests of one or two airports. There is all a network that has to be considered, even if for the good performance of the system", said Correia. "I believe that on top of everything the government is prioritizing the safety in the airports and this involves high investments. Due to that, the idea of giving the private initiative the management of some terminals", affirmed the Anac's superintendent, emphasizing that the agency will be the responsible for the conduction of the concession process. For the president of the Brazilian Institute of Strategic Studies and Public Policies in Air Transportation (CEPTA), Respício Espírito Santo Júnior, domestic and international tourism is greatly impacted by the lack of airport infrastructure. "Tourists that come on business, leisure, or due to health reasons can only enter the Country by air, as there are no other options. The heavy investment in the renewal of the already existing airports will contribute for greater inflow of income", said Espírito Santo.
