Yesterday, in a visit to São Bernardo do Campo, in the Metropolitan Region of São Paulo, President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva said the region will accompany the process of development that will be promoted with the exploration of the pre-salt oil layer. He affirmed the Intermunicipal Consortium, made up by the seven municipalities - Santo André, São Bernardo, São Caetano, Diadema, Mauá, Ribeirão Pires and Rio Grande da Serra -, "is an example of maturity for the whole country ".
Lula announced that up to 2010 the Federal Government will invest R$ 8.5 billion (US$ 4.5 billion) in the Metropolitan Area of São Paulo. R$ 1.7 billion (US$ 894.7 million) of it will be aimed at the Refinery of Capuava and R$ 1.2 million (US$ 631.6 million) for works of the Road Ring (Rodoanel) (which will consume, in total, R$ 3.6 million / US$ 1.9 billion, and the other 2/3 will come from the State Government).
Da Silva emphasized the potential of the region pointing out it is responsible for the production of 58% of the trucks and 25% of the cars of the whole national fleet and made an invitation to the mayors. "The Federal Government wants to send a message: bring projects that we have money for them. No Governor and no Mayor who has a project leaves Brasilia with nothing in his hands". The host Mayor, Luiz Marinho, asked Senator Aloizio Mercadante about the development of projects in the National Congress, facilitating the installation of dry ports. "São Bernardo has an eye on the dry ports, complementing the logistics of the largest port of the Country, the port of Santos".
Da Silva took part in the launching of the cornerstone of the Federal University of the ABC (Metropolitan Region) (UFABC). With the implementation, the Federal Mid-Southeast Learning Network is being created, with the support of the Federal University of the ABC (UFABC). In the ABC region, the UFABC is already operating in Santo André and, since 2010, it will also be operating in São Bernardo. The municipality of Mauá will, very soon, have a campus as well. These will be integrated to the campi of Guarulhos, Osasco and Santos, making a sort of university ring.
