2010 was marked by the recovery of the levels of production and sales of architectural coatings in Brazil. Agents of the sector are celebrating this year's results, which were reviewed and should present average growth of 10.3% if all categories of paints are put together. Those applied in civil construction have driven the sales, with an increase that should reach 12% compared to 2009. The perspective for 2011 continues positive: manufacturers bet on growth between 7% and 8% over the strong basis for comparison of this year, which has already registered the record volume - more than one billion liters of architectural coatings, out of a total of 1.359 billion liters if added to the automotive and industrial paints.

According to Antonio Carlos Lacerda, Vice-President for South America of Paints and Varnishes of BASF, German multinational withholder of the brands Suvinil and Glasurit, all real estate markets had relevant performance for the sector to reach such performance. For 2011 the expectation of BASF is growth of 8% on the numbers this year. With an eye on that growth of the market Lacerda recalled the company is investing nearly R$ 100 million (US$ 58.8 million) to increase its productive capacity in nearly 70% in the next four years. That amount, he said, is intended to a new plant, which may be erected in Guaratinguetá (SP). Besides, there are enlargements for the plant of São Bernardo do Campo (SP) and Jaboatão dos Guararapes (PE). With that, the company would have an installed capacity of 500 million liters a year.

In the businesses of Sherwin-Williams, manufacturer brands like Metalatex and Novacor, 2010 is also evaluated as positive. The growth of the sector of architectural coatings stayed at nearly 2 percentage points above the average of the sector, according to the Marketing Manager for the segment in the company, David Ivy Jr., who also sees 2011 with optimism. Among the segments whose sales grow the most is the premium segment, of higher value added.

The reflection of the expansion in the segment of paints also was felt by suppliers of inputs for the sector. Carbono Química registered 20% growth in the sales of titanium dioxide for the manufacture of paints. The company also attributes the growth to the tax benefits the sector was granted, and to the heating of the real estate market and improvement of households. For 2011, Carbono says the perspective follows the trend of the manufacturers, which is, in that case, of growth of 15% on the data of 2010.
