DCI - 12/02/2008

The segment of cookies may reach the end of 2008 with an increase of 4.1% in volume compared to 2007 - which corresponds to additional 46 thousand tons. The forecast is that, YTD, the sector has produced a total of 1.177 million tons, while in 2007 the volume sold was of 1.131 million. According to José dos Santos dos Reis, president of the Association of the Industries of Pasta and Cookies of the State of São Paulo (Simabesp) and vice-president of the National Association of the Cookie Industry (Anib), the sales plant's invoicing was around R$ 5.65 billion (US$ 2.5 billion). "In fact, what we had was a real increase of nearly 1.5%", he explains. According to Reis, the increase occurred due to the launching of new products with greater added-value and not because of the products that were already being sold. That result also keeps Brazil as the second largest market for cookies in the world, only behind the United States. In consumption, Brazil is in 12th place in the ranking, with a per capita average of consumption of six kilograms a year. For 2009, the sector foresees growth of 2.2% in volume. Filled cookies were responsible for 28% of the production of the sector, followed by snacks that corresponded to 22%. Butter cookies were responsible for 14%, whereas maize cookies and other categories corresponded to 12% each.
