Jobs in industry at greatest high in 3 years
O Estado de S. Paulo
The generation of jobs in the State of São Paulo had record growth in March. The data of the Survey on the Level of Employment, released yesterday by the Federation of Industries of the State of São Paulo (Fiesp), indicate growth of 1.37% (with the seasonal adjustment), in relation to February. It was the greatest percentage variation since December 2006, when it rose 1.43%. Without the seasonal adjustment, there was an increase of 2.05%, the greatest since April 2008. In total, the industry created 45 thousand jobs in March. In the year, the increase amounts to 3.66%, with 79 thousand new job positions. In relation to March 2009, the growth is of 1.64%, with a balance of 36 thousand jobs. Of the 22 sectors surveyed, 20 hired and 2 informed stability in the level of employment.
According to Paulo Francini, Director of the Department of Researches and Economic Studies of the Fiesp, the result shows consistent growth. "We had strong generation of jobs. Such growth is neither episodic nor is it concentrated in any sector". Francini stressed out the production of sugar and alcohol. This sector increased the number of employed people by 1.25%, which means 27.3 thousand of the total of 45 thousand jobs opened in March. According to Antonio de Padua Rodrigues, Director of the Union of the Sugarcane Industry (Unica), the sector hired before it normally happens because of the anticipation of the harvest, and it did not lay off as many employees as expected. At least 20 plants in the State did not interrupt the harvest at the end of the year and maintained the personnel.
Yet, Braz Agostinho Albertini, President of the Federation of Agricultural Workers of the State of São Paulo (Feats), believes the increase in the number of jobs in the sector is temporary. "Year after year the number of workers decreases". According to Francini, the pace of growth of employment should be maintained in the first half. The forecast of the Fiesp for the level of employment in 2010 is of increase of 6.2%. "It would be a very strong generation of jobs, the greatest since 2007, when it was 4.6%".
