IT market grew 8.2% in the Country in 2008

The Brazilian market of information technology grew 8.2% last year, with a total net income of R$ 45.95 billion. The data are from the Anuário Informática Hoje 2009. In dollars, the 2008 growth was even biggter, 16.2%, amounting to US$ 25.36 billion. Last year, the devaluation of the American currency reached 6.9%.
For the second year in a row, HP Brasil was pointed as the biggest computer company of the Country, with earnings of US$ 2.74 billion. In second place was IBM Brasil, and Positivo Informática in third. Positivo, the biggest Brazilian producer of PCs, gained one position in relation to the previous year, surpassing Samsung, which fell from third to fourth place. HP surpassed IBM as the biggest technology company in 2007.
The Yearbook pointed that 84% of the companies of the sector that publish their balance registered profit in 2008, and that 30% of them registered profitability on sales above 10%. The segment of services was the one that presented the biggest growth, with an increase of 20% in its net income, which increased from US$ 10.9 billion in 2007 to US$ 13.1 billion. The participation of services in the computer market reached 52%.
The segment of equipment (hardware) increased 13%, with net earnings of US$ 9.4 billion, and market share of 37%. The software segment grew 8%, with earnings of US$ 2.8 billion and 11% of market share. The Yearbook chose Totvs, the biggest Brazilian software company, as the company of the year. It went from 24th to the 19th place on the list of the biggest companies of Brazil. Its net income increased 66% in 2008.
