IPT modernizes Laboratory of Metrological References
Agência FAPESP - 07/27/10
The Institute of Technological Researches (IPT) has modernized the measurement structure for high quality determinations in chemistry in the Laboratory of Metrological References (LRM) of the Center for Metrology in Chemistry. With that, the lab increases its capacity to certify of materials of reference for the industry. The renovation of the LRM will allow the development of new certified reference materials and the promotion of new inter-laboratory proficiency programs that support the guarantee of quality in the measurements in the steel industry, metallurgy, mining and oil, besides universities and research institutions in Brazil and abroad. The laboratory, founded in 1976, has already developed and released more than 130 types of materials with different certified properties, including metallic alloys, mineral alloys and oil products. The materials are used in the instrumental calibrations and validation of methods of chemical analysis and physicochemical tests. The modernization of the instrumentation was necessary, because with the evolution of the technology, industry and University need standards with more certified properties.
The reconstruction of the laboratory, the adaptation of the infrastructure and the acquisition of a significant set of imported standards will increase the productive capacity, improve the traceability of the determinations made in the laboratory and protect the environments of analysis better from the environmental and cross contamination. In addition to the traditional materials, the IPT is also developing certifications of new materials, including some chemical elements in trace levels, new physicochemical properties and properties of oil products, aiming at meeting the demands of laboratories that have to meet the more advanced requirements and legislations.
