Meritor, a US manufacturer of heavy-duty truck axles, announced an investment of R$ 200 million for the construction of its second plant in the state of São Paulo. The company, which has been in Osasco for 64 years, will build a new plant covering 160,000 square meters in Roseira, Vale do Paraíba.

“We are expanding our production lines because we expect the Brazilian market to continue its progressive recovery. We aim at meeting Meritor’s strategic goal of growing as a market leader, offering the best service,” said Adalberto Momi, general director of Meritor in Brazil. “This new plant will help the company to exceed customer expectations, following the expected growth of the market.”

InvestSP provided environmental, infrastructure, tax advice and support in finding a place that would meet the needs of Meritor’s project. The city of Roseira was chosen because it is located in Vale do Paraíba. The region is considered strategic for the company, as it connects the states of São Paulo, Rio de Janeiro and Minas Gerais.

“InvestSP team worked hard for Meritor to make the decision to open its new plant in the state of São Paulo. The contribution shows the company’s confidence in the automotive sector in São Paulo, which continues to attract new and important investments,” said the president of InvestSP, Wilson Mello.

The plant in Roseira will represent one of Meritor’s biggest investments in a global facility in the past two decades. Proof of the company’s commitment to meet the growth of the commercial vehicle industry in Brazil. “We are very confident and excited about this new phase we started in 2020,” said the general director of Meritor in Brazil.

The plant in Osasco, which completed 64 years, is considered a pioneer in the manufacture of components and axles for the commercial vehicle market. However, its current location in the city center and the traffic and logistics restrictions do not withstand further expansion, thus driving the decision to invest in a new plant.

Project details

The construction of the new plant is scheduled to start in March 2020 and is expected to take approximately 13 months, opening in April 2021. The industrial building, which covers 30,000 square meters, will feature modern production lines based on the Industry 4.0 systems – focusing on the principles of safety and sustainability – which are being implemented worldwide.
