Investe SP provides assistance to Mercedes-Benz for the construction of a plant in SP

Initial investment will be R$ 500 million and received full support from São Paulo’s agency; Approximately one thousand jobs will be created in the first phase

The company Daimler, which owns the German brand of automobiles and trucks Mercedes-Benz announced on Tuesday, October 1, the creation of a new car plant in Iracemápolis, located 160 km from the state capital.  The investment project was assisted by Investe São Paulo, and the official announcement was made at an event held at Palácio dos Bandeirantes, attended by Governor Geraldo Alckmin.

According to the German automaker, the plant will produce the next generation of C-Class vehicles and the recently launched GLA, in addition to other models to be defined.  The plant, which will be installed on an area covering 2.4 million square meters, will receive the initial investment of approximately R$ 500 million, generating one thousand new jobs. The idea is to start the production of approximately 20 million vehicles per year by 2016. Moreover, two thousand new jobs will be created at a later stage.

For the São Paulo State Governor, Geraldo Alckmin, the announcement of the new plant in Iracemápolis represents a perspective of technological advance and the generation of thousands of direct and indirect jobs.

“Mercedes-Benz is a giant of the international automobile industry, which has a strong brand with quality and innovation. The construction of another plant here proves that the excellence of human capital and the infrastructure of São Paulo make all the difference for those who come to invest in Brazil, as well as the excellent support from the agency Investe São Paulo, which has the mission of being a partner of companies that choose to operate in our state,” said Governor Geraldo Alckmin.

According to the global president of Mercedes-Benz, Andreas Renschler, the purpose of the new plant is to increase the global production network. “We will nationalize two products highly attractive to the segment of premium vehicles in Brazil,” he said.

The investment was disputed by states such as Minas Gerais, Santa Catarina and Rio de Janeiro. However, with the support from Investe São Paulo, the company ended up choosing the small town located between five municipalities of great economic importance: Limeira, Piracicaba, Rio Claro, Americana and Santa Bárbara do Oeste.

Among the services provided are the location of the area, advice on infrastructure, environmental permits and tax issues. “We have been providing assistance to the company since the beginning of the year. Our team evaluated over ten cities, both with regard to environmental and infrastructure aspects, and visited seven counties along with members of the company. We will continue to assist Mercedes-Benz and will also be the focal point of contact of the company with all agencies of the State Government, expediting the development and contributing to the success of the undertaking,” said the president of Investe São Paulo, Luciano Almeida.

For Philip Schiemer, president of Mercedes-Benz in Brazil and CEO of Daimler for Latin America, the proximity of the new factory from the existing plant in Juiz de Fora (MG) was also strategic for choosing the city, allowing a better integration between the two units and the possibility of exchange of employees between them.  “With the local production of cars, Mercedes-Benz stands out as the only company operating in all segments of mobility in Brazil, with cars, trucks, buses and vans,” said Schiemer.
