Infraero running against time to enlarge its system

Valor Econômico – 08/11/2008

What is the probability of Brazil - not as a soccer team, but as an organizer of the 2014 Soccer World Cup - think of itself as a rushed team which needs to score a goal at the last minute of the second half to win the game? In relation to airports, Infraero says that it is "running against time" so that its entire network is in "perfect conditions and may safely and comfortably receive passengers from Brazil and abroad". At the request of Valor, the state company sent more detailed information on what improvements are planned until 2014 and what stage they are. The company informed that in the next six years the nominal capacity of Guarulhos must grow from 16.5 million passengers a year to 30 million. Today, the nominal value is half of the capacity calculated as the real one. In Viracopos, the calculated increase is two million a year, up to 17 million; in Galeão (RJ), from 15 million to 22 million; in Brasilia, from 7.4 million to 25 million and, in Confins, in Belo Horizonte, from four million to eight million. In Viracopos, which, according to Infraero, will be the most important airport of the system until 2030, the construction of the second runway and new patios are expected for the end of 2010. Infraero, however, did not specify the deadline for the improvement of the passenger terminal which is essential for the increase of the capacity. In Guarulhos, the state-owned company says two new aprons and the third passenger terminal will be built.
