Industry shows more consistent recovery in September

O Estado de S. Paulo

The Brazilian industry presented in September the first signs of a more consistent recovery after the world crisis and it is still working easily in the use of the productive capacity. The indicators announced yesterday by the National Industry Confederation (CNI) show that, for the first time since September 2008, the actual sales, the hours worked, the employment and the real salary mass have increased compared to the previous month.

Only the level of use of the installed capacity decreased in August from 80.2% to 79.8% in September, which the CNI considered a movement of "accommodation". "In September, the industry kept in the path of recovery a more comprehensive way", said the Head Economist of the CNI, Flavio Castelo Branco. Although there has been positive variation compared to August, all indicators continued below the level of September 2008. In the year to date in 2009, the result is much worse than last year's.

Castelo Branco believes, however, that in the months of November and December it will already be possible to have some segments and indicators presenting growth compared to the same period of 2008. "What would mean we would have a trajectory nearer to overcoming the crisis, which will only more significantly take place at some point in the first half of 2010", he said. For this year, the CNI maintains the estimation of fall at 4% of the industrial GDP.

An important point of data of the CNI, observed the economist, is that, in September, the hours worked in the production have increased for the first time this year: 0.4% compared to August. In the previous months, the behavior of the worked hours varied between the negative and stability fields. This is the indicator that more closely measures the production. Compared to September 2008, there is still a 10.4% fall and in the year to date in 2009, the worked hours are 9.1% below those of the same period of 2008. The actual sales of the industry, measured by the income, increased 1% compared to August. In the year, they fell 7.5%. Employment increased 0.2% in September, and the salary mass, 2.7%.
