Industry grows apace and plans investments

The Brazilian industry is growing fast and it is determined to invest in the expansion of production, as show the surveys disclosed yesterday by research entities connected to the industry and by the Brazilian Institute of Geography and Statistics (IBGE). The sales of the São Paulo industry are greater this year compared to the same period last year. That is the finding of the survey conducted by the Federation of Industries of the State of São Paulo (Fiesp).

52% of the companies surveyed had better sales level: it is the highest level in the history of the survey, started in 2006. Among the companies polled, the big industries reported having sold 12.3% more at the end of this year than at the end of 2009. Among the medium-sized businesses, the sales were 10% greater, and the small industries reported the sales at the end of the year were 3.2% greater than those reported last year. According to the entity, 80% of the large companies have registered a boom in sales; as regards the medium-sized ones, the indicator fell back to 64%. The lowest level stayed with the small companies: 41% reported greater sales this year as compared to the last. Likewise, the earnings were better for the large and medium-sized companies. The survey also indicates the year-end sales were, on average, 6.2% greater in 2010 compared to last year.

For Paulo Francini, Director of the Department of Researches and Economic Studies of the Fiesp, the results of the survey are cheering. At the end of 2006 and 2008, most companies registered sales below those of the year before - the falls were of 43% in 2006 and 66% in 2008. In 2007 and 2009, the largest industries registered greater sales, but a level lower than this year's - the increase achieved 46% in 2007 and 41% in 2009. The earnings this year were also much greater than those seen in the sales at the end of 2009, 1.7% more compared to that of the prior period.

"The interesting thing is that we are comparing a good period to a bad period, but two good year-ends. In 2009 there was already a recovery in the sales in the industry that stayed 6.2% above those registered in a year that was also good", said Francini. In his assessment, industry should end 2010 with an increase of nearly 10% in production. According to the survey, the year-end orders took place with the traditional regularity. Most industries surveyed (47%) received orders in the months of September and October. Another 23% answered the orders came in late; 12%, in advance; and 18% were not affected by the end of the year.

Another indicator released yesterday that proves such increase in the industrial sales came from the Brazilian Institute of Geography and Statistics (IBGE). The Institute reported the Brazilian industrial production grew 0.4% in October compared to the result of the previous month, in the series with a seasonal adjustment. In the consolidated in the year until October, the production in the industrial sector accumulates an increase of 11.8%, same as when the indicator is compared the past 12 months.
