In 2010, Investe SP attracts US$ 966 million in investments
Agency attracts companies to São Paulo and works in the relationship with Governments and international bodies
The former Secretary of Development, Luciano Almeida, took over, this week, the Presidency of Investe São Paulo, São Paulo Agency for the Promotion of Investments and Competitiveness in charge of attracting companies to the State. As an invitation of the new Secretary of the Department, Vice-Governor Guilherme Afif Domingos, Luciano Almeida will head the agency that, today, has 68 projects in the portfolio, accounting for an investment potential of R$ 17.8 billion (US$ 10.5 billion) with capacity to generate nearly 64 thousand direct jobs and 232 thousand indirect jobs.
During 2010, Investe São Paulo has captured five large companies for the State that will invest R$ 1.7 billion (US$ 966 million) in the building of their plants and will hire more than 9.4 thousand workers. "The goal for 2011 is that more companies get installed in the State of São Paulo with public policies for the attraction of investments that generate more jobs and income for the population of São Paulo", highlights the new President of Investe SP.
Among the companies that have announced their coming to São Paulo last year is the Chinese Chery that will invest US$ 400 million (nearly R$ 680 million) in the erection of a plant in the city of Jacarei, in the region known as Vale do Paraíba. The company shall produce 150 thousand vehicles a year and it will give jobs to three thousand people.
Another Chinese that signed a memorandum of understanding with Investe SP, was Sany, which operates in the production of machines and equipment for construction. The company has already started the production of excavators in São José dos Campos; nevertheless, the Asian giant will erect a new plant in a place still to be announced. The investment planned for the undertaking amounts to US$ 200 million (nearly R$ 340 million) with an estimate of generating one thousand direct jobs.
Cebrace, largest producer of glasses and mirrors of South America, has started the enlargement of its plant in Jacareí, in an investment of nearly R$ 390 million (US$ 229.4 million). The new facility, intended for the production of flat glasses, will have productive capacity for 900 tons a day (300 thousand tons/year).
Other sector catered by Investe in São Paulo is the aerospace. The company Penido will build an undertaking in the city of Caçapava with direct access to the runway, allowing activities such as hangar service, maintenance, manufacture and assembling of aircrafts. The activity should generate 5 thousand direct jobs and investments of nearly R$ 200 million (US$ 117.6 million).
Finally, among the five companies attracted in 2010 is the Spanish multinational Gestamp Automoción. In an R$ 125 million (US$ 73.5 million) investment, the company will initially produce printed items and welded metal structural sets for the cars of General Motors and Honda. The fourth plant of the company in Brazil is expected to generate nearly 400 direct jobs and have annual earnings of R$ 200 million (US$ 117.6 million).
Besides the companies announced last year, Investe SP is responsible for the arrival of the Japanese Toyota and the Korean Hyundai in the State of São Paulo that will get settled in the municipalities of Sorocaba and Piracicaba, respectively.
During the year, Investe SP also informed, instructed and followed up potential foreign and national investors in meetings with agencies of State and Municipal governments. Currently, the main investment projects under negotiation are in the sectors of cars, foods, oil and gas, energy, solid waste, machines and equipment. Potential investors originate in the United States, China, South Korea, Spain, Japan and France.
In 2011, Investe São Paulo intends to increase its operations abroad. "We want to achieve mainly the countries of Asia, Europe and the United States in the attraction of companies in the areas of aerospace, oil and gas, research and development, among others", emphasizes Almeida.
Institutional relations
Another service rendered by Investe SP is the reception and support to delegations and business and institutional missions. In 2010, the Agency received 139 delegations, an increase of 80% compared to the previous year. The missions received came from 38 countries, mainly Spain, China, the United States and Portugal.
The number should grow in 2011. Investe SP has joined the World Association of Investment Promotion Agencies (Waipa), with 249 investment promotion agencies from 157 countries.
Abroad, the agency has represented the State in conferences and events on investment opportunities in Portugal, Germany, Italy, England, Argentina, China and Singapore.
