IBM has just completed the construction of a new data center in Hortolândia, a municipality in the Interior of São Paulo, where it keeps its headquarters for the rendering of information technology (IT) services. The 800 square-meter building has consumed a total investment of US$ 10 million. The initiative demanded nine months of work, between planning and construction, besides the improvement of an office building, with the installation of raised flooring and new electrical infrastructure capable of supporting the air conditioning systems.

With the increase of the infrastructure, IBM intends to increase its offer of technology services, in special projects related to IT outsourcing, through which the company supplies equipment and services. The investment in the region reflects the new contracts signed by the company, including the five-year US$ 115 million agreement closed with Pão de Açúcar at the end of last year. The transaction foresees the transfer of two data centers of the retail group to the facilities of IBM.

According to the information disclosed by IBM, last year the company invested US$ 12 million to increase the capacity of the infrastructure of emergency of its data center. IBM got installed in Hortolândia in 1971, when it built a plant of electric typewriters, data storage disks, and microcomputers in the city. Today, the company keeps the city its second largest service center in the world, only being overcome by the Technological center that got installed in India. On the whole, the company has six large global service centers, which also include the facilities in Argentina and China.

Asked by Valor, the press office of IBM did not inform how many employees it currently has in the interior of São Paulo or whether such number will be increased with new facilities. A year ago, the payroll of IBM in Hortolândia had nearly 7 000 employees.
