IBGE: industrial employment grows for the 26th consecutive time

Industrial employment grew 2.5% in August, in comparison with last year's August, completing a sequence of 26 positive rates, in this comparison basis. However, when comparing August with July, employment in the sector fell 0.1%, in the series with seasonal adjustments, informed the IBGE today. The result inverts two months of growth in occupation in industry on a monthly basis. With the result, until August industrial employment accumulates a 2.8% high in the year and 3% in the last 12 months. The quarterly movable average index of industry employment, considered as main trend indicator, shows a 0.4% increase in the quarter ended in August compared to the one finished in July. In the comparison with last year's August, the number of workers grew in 12 of the 18 segments, and in 12 of the 14 surveyed locations. Among the sectors, the biggest positive impacts in the national average in August compared to 2007's August were given by machinery and equipment (10.6%); (,) means of transportation (8.4%); machinery, electro-electronic and communication devices (11.7%); (,) and chemical products (10.0%). Considering the locations, the most relevant positive contributions came from the states of São Paulo (2.8%), Minas Gerais (6.3%), Rio Grande do Sul (4%) and from the North and Mid-West regions (2.7%). Contrarily to that, also in comparison with last year's August, the regions of Santa Catarina (-1%) and Pernambuco (-3.5%) had the only negative pressures among the areas, while, considering the sectors, the ones with the main negative influences in the formation of the global index, in the same basis of comparison were: Country's total clothing activities (-5.6%), wood (-10%), textile (-6.4%,) and shoes and leather articles (-3.1%).
