Hospitals make partnership to research cancer
Gazeta Mercantil - 10/10/2008
Israeli Hospital Albert Einstein, in São Paulo, and the Pio XII Foundation, maintainer of the Cancer Hospital of Barretos (SP), have just made a partnership that will put researches about cancer in the Country in a new scientific level. According to the agreement, the Albert Einstein Hospital will set up a mega laboratory of molecular biology in the Cancer Hospital of Barretos. In exchange, the tumor base of the HCancer - the biggest one in the Country, with 15 thousand tissue and blood samples - will start being used by professionals of the Brazil's both oncology reference-hospitals. "With the molecular biology laboratory we will be able to extract genetic material, such as DNA and RNA, from the tumors, and establish research lines and common projects so that we can have new clues to know prognostics and new indications for treatment for the incurable tumors", said Albert Einstein Hospital's coordinator of the oncology program, Auro Del Giglio. According to the technical director of the Cancer Hospital of Barretos, Edmund Mauad, the initial project of the partnership will be made in precocious diagnosis of the breast cancer. He informs that for five years the Cancer Hospital of Barretos, through mobile units, has already worked in mammographic traceability in the São Paulo regions of Barretos and Jales and in Juazeiro (BA), the latter in partnership with singer Ivete Sangalo and the government of the state of Bahia. "In total, 50 thousand women aged between 40 and 69 years were seen. We make mammography tests in mobile units, biopsies in suspect cases and treatments of the disease", says Mauad. This experience, according to Mauad, will be shared with the Albert Einstein Hospital and used in the population of Paraisópolis, the second biggest poor community of the State, where the Albert Einstein Hospital has been working for more than ten years through the Einstein Program in the Paraisópolis Community (PECP). According to Mauad, the partnership will generate better results, more efficiency and rationalization of the operational costs. "It will also represent a very high social gain in traceability, coverage and control of cancer", says the expert. The agreement will be valid for 10 years and also comprises the part of administration and training, technological equipment cession and the hybrid use of laboratories of the bone marrow base. The clinical body of doctors will be allocated according to the needs and development of the studies. The fourth service in the world in oncological technical excellence, the Cancer Hospital of Barretos (SP) has 2.5 thousand consultations per day, 99% of which through the Centralized Health System (SUS). The hospital close the year of 2007 with 450 thousand seen patients, from which 43 thousand were in the prevention area, in 1.1 thousand municipalities of all 27 States of the Country.
