Fiesp sees undeniable resumption of São Paulo industry
O Estado de S. Paulo
The data of the industrial activity of São Paulo in September shows an "undeniable" trend of recovery, evaluates the director of the Department of Researches and Economic Studies of the Federation of Industries of the State of São Paulo (Fiesp), Paulo Francini. Of the 19 sectors that form the survey of the Index of the Level of Industrial Activity (INA), 17 had growth and only two - Information Technology and Paper and Pulp - had negative results. The INA increased 4.3% in September compared to August in the calculation with the seasonal adjustment, in the best result since April, 2008, when the index increased 5.5% compared to March.
The result of September was mainly influenced by the growth in the real sales of the industry, of 7.5% in September compared to August. Even the sectors most affected by the crisis in the Country had positive performance in September. The level of activity of Basic Metallurgy, for instance, grew 3.8% in September compared to August (with seasonal adjustment). The real sales of the sector had an increase of 17.7%.
The sector of Machinery and Equipment had an increase of 4.2% in the industrial activity in September compared to August (with the seasonal adjustment). The real sales of the sector increased 9.4%. Another sector with a significant result in September was the Car Sector, with an increase of 6.4% in the activity compared to August (with seasonal adjustment) and of 8.3% in real sales.
Fiesp foresees a fall between 7.5% and 8% in the level of the industry activity this year, compared to 2008. The reduction, according to Francini, should happen because of the decrease in the exports of industrialized products, estimated at 30% by Fiesp. In the domestic market, the industry should remain stable in relation to 2008. According to him, the problem in the exchange rate and in the continuous valuation of the Brazilian Real in relation to the US Dollar. In the evaluation of the Fiesp, the taxation of 2% of IOF (Financial Operation Tax) on the influx of foreign capital will not be enough. "Anyhow, the taxation of the IOF on the foreign capital means the acknowledgment of a problem, which is quite a progress."
