The global agricultural production will grow nearly 40% over the next 10 years, especially in Brazil, which should account for 70% of this total. The forecast is of Roque Dechen, director of the Superior School of Applied Economics (ESALQ), to whom the sector bets in sustainability and technology to maintain the quality of the raw materials and the high rates of growth seen in recent years. In line with this prediction, Nestlé, which expects to grow on average 5% annually in the dairy production in the world, should provide more than US$ 50 million in microcredit so that their farmers invest in sustainability.
Roberto Dechen, who is also Vice-Dean of USP (University of São Paulo), the watchword in the Brazilian agricultural sector is sustainability. He spoke yesterday on the subject during the 2nd Forum of Shared Value Creation made by Nestlé. "All we have to worry about the sustainability of the agricultural production, which generates both the quality of raw materials and food security. Today this is charged both, from the professional of agronomy and from the student, exactly so that all s/he does is focused on sustainability. All actions of planting, harvesting and processing of products must be guided by the sustainability", commented Roberto Dechen.
Dechen said that to get good results in production it is required to combine sustainability, which is based on development that meets present needs, to technological advances, without compromising the capacity of future generations to meet their own needs. "We are concerned with the expected growth in the country in the coming years, we must invest heavily in new technologies". He argued. In addition, the vice-dean also advocates the change in the curriculum of current agronomy colleges, for better preparation in relation to the productive demand of the sector until 2020. The Brazilian bet seems to reflect as well, the world expectations, said the director of the Agricultural Division of Nestlé SA, Hans Jöhr. For him, the sustainability issue is a global trend, as it is linked to the environmental preservation, improvement in product quality and increase of production.
