Durables consumption intention increases again
Folha de S. Paulo
After the end of tax release of the IPI (Excise Tax), which has diminished the consumption intention of the Brazilian consumer, the indexes started increasing again in 2010. In May, the percentage of Brazilians who intend to purchase any piece of durable goods within three months reached 17%, level above peak of February, according to the Fecomércio-RJ (Federation of Commerce of the State of Rio de Janeiro). "The index was rising since the beginning of the year, but we had an adjustment because the end of the release of the IPI", says Christian Travassos, economist of the entity. Even the products that were granted an IPI release, and already had it lifted, such as refrigerators, stoves and cars, registered a high level of purchase intention. TV sets stand out because of the FIFA World Cup.
According to Francisco Pessoa, of LCA Consultores, it is possible there will be acceleration, but it may not be so strong, and he alerts for the reaction of the BC (Central Bank) in case of high growth. The survey indicates the amount of consumers who have financings has increased and that amount of people in default has decreased. The percentage of Brazilians who said there will be money left after all expenses have been paid remained at 37%, compared to 30% in April. "The overall favorable environment makes the consumer prone to purchase goods involving installment credit" says Marcel Solimeo, of the Commercial Association of SP. The survey covered one thousand households in nine metropolitan regions.
