Deicmar diversifies and enters environmental area

Valor Econômico

Deicmar, which controls a port terminal for the shipping of vehicles in Santos, has just announced the creation of a new company. It is Deicmar Ambiental, arm of the group focused on the development of sustainable logistics solutions and environmental licensing. According to the Director of the company, Gerson Foratto, the company was looking for a new business opportunity. Since the logistics branch has been betting on processes to improve the levels of eco-efficiency, they saw a new opportunity.

"It is a sector that is still crawling. The São Paulo Law of Climatic Changes foresees the reduction of nearly 50% on the CO2 emissions by 2050. How do we reduce the emissions without having a more efficient logistics", he questions. Foratto recognizes the need to change the cargo transport matrix is one of the exits - a culture little inculcated in the users of ports. The bet on the new business was also a result of experiences in the own port terminal of Deicmar. With the rational use of the water to wash the equipment, the company saved on the use of water by 30%. In total, the fleet has 90 units weighing, on average, nearly 30 tons - already including containers and wharf machinery.

Another challenge for the companies is the fulfillment of the law of solid waste until 2014. Today, Deicmar produces 5 tons a month. Other solutions concern the reverse logistics to use a capacity that several times gets idle in one of the trips of the transport. Despite the nearness to the port of Santos, due to the terminal of the group, Deicmar Ambiental does not want to be limited to the region of Baixada Santista. Meanwhile, Foratto does not reveal whether any projects have already been closed. The group closed 2010 with turnover of R$ 170 million (US$ 106.3 million), nearly 30% more than the result of the previous year. The projection for this year amounts to R$ 180 million (US$ 112.5 million).
