Dedini increases portfolio and bets in exports

Valor Econômico – 04/01/2009

Strongly affected by the crisis that reached a great part of the sugar and alcohol plants of the country, Dedini Indústrias de Base, from Piracicaba (SP), choose to deepen the diversification in order to increase its business. In Brazil, the company will raise the bet in equipment for the energy, mining and steel sectors to reduce the problems in the sugar and alcohol area. Overseas, it intends to define, until the end of this semester, the opening of a branch office in Africa and another in India.

The strategy of diversification was successfully adopted by the company in the 90's, when the sugar and alcohol sector also went through serious difficulties. In order to assure its survival, Dedini started producing equipment for the beverage industry, which were living an excellent phase. With that, it became a reference in the manufacturing of equipment for that segment. With an income of R$ 2.2 billion (US$ 1.2 billion) in the last year and 100% of family control, the company also started elaborating a process of capital restructuring, which may result in the entrance of a new investor or even in an investment of the BNDES (National Development Bank), through the bank branch of participations, BNDESPar.

According to Sérgio Leme, CEO of Dedini, the sugar and alcohol segment that was responsible, in the last years, for up to 60% of the income of the company will lose room. From 2009 on, the share should fall to something between 40% and 45%. The equipment aimed to the area of energy - which include boilers for the cogeneration of energy from the bagasse and the construction of SHPs (Small Hydroelectric Plants) - and the segments of mining and steel will gain more room in the portfolio of the company. Dedini also operates in the segments of beverage, treatment of effluents and sanitation. "The infrastructure sector is the one with the most potential of growth and we will focus on it", affirmed Leme. In that segment, the casting area is heated, with orders even for exports.
