Country is already the fifth most attractive market for software

Valor Economic – 04/16/2009

Brazil is already the fifth most attractive market for investments in the software sector. The exports of the sector have been increasing quickly, leaping from US$ 800 million in 2007 to US$ 1.4 billion last year. The domestic market, on its turn, is already larger than India's, main world producer of computer programs. The data are included in the survey requested by the Brazilian Government to A.T. Kearney, one of the largest consulting companies of the world, and to the International Data Corporation (IDC), a company specialized in the survey of information on the information technology (IT) and telecommunications sectors.

"One of the surprises of the survey is that it shows that the Brazilian domestic market is larger than India's today", informs Ricardo Saur, director of special projects of the Brazilian Association of the Software Companies (Brasscom). Its estimated that the sector operates nearly US$ 15 billion (nearly R$ 33 billion). In 2005, the country was in the 10th place in the world ranking of attractiveness calculated by A.T. Kearney, which takes into consideration requirements such as financial costs, specialized manpower availability and business environment.  In the 2007 ranking, the last one available, Brazil leaped to the 5th position, only behind Thailand, Malaysia, China and India, in that order.
