O Estado de S. Paulo
The retail sales of computer equipment continue growing much above the average of the commerce, in spite of the greater restriction of credit and the suspicion of consumers. According to the data of the IBGE (Brazilian Institute of Geography and Statistics), the segment of office supplies and computers accumulated an increase in sales of 18.1% in the first quarter of 2009, a result much above the commerce in general (4.5%). The expansion verified in 2009 gives continuity to a process of intense growth in the sales of computer products in the retail. In five years, between 2004 and 2008, this segment accumulated an increase of 280% in the sales. The survey questions what products the consumer intends to buy with his/her money, and the computer products stayed far ahead the washing machine, for example, with 3.5% of the purchase intentions.
The technician of coordination of services and commerce of the IBGE, Nilo Lopes explained the continuity in the growth of the sales of computer products in the retail reflects "the reduction of price and the growing relevance of these goods in the daily routine of the consumer. Moreover, according to him the recent fall in the price of the dollar has reduced prices and promoted the sales of those products again.
