Center with emphasis on pre-salt

Agência FAPESP

São Paulo State University - UNESP - (Universidade Estadual Paulista) and Petrobras inaugurated, on Tuesday (23/11), in Rio Claro campus, the building of the Center for Geoscience Applied to Petroleum (Unespetro), which will focus on training specialists and developing research, with emphasis on carbonate rocks - that form the pre-salt and other major oil reservoirs in Brazil.

With 2 thousand square meters of usefularea, R$ 10.5 million (US$ 6.18 million) were initially invested for the construction of the building and purchase of the equipment and furniture. Of the total amount, nearly R$ 9.2 million (US$ 5.4 million) are related to the Petrobras´ Technologal Network and R$ 1.3 million (US$ 764,700) is the counterpart of Unesp, which also responds for the recruitment of teachers and technical-administrative servers.

"The Unespetro is the first complex of a Brazilian university conceived under the systemic approach to gather the main sciences that comprise the sedimentary geology, mainly targeting the carbonate rocks", said Dimas Dias Brito, coordinator of the center and professor of the Geosciences and Exact Sciences Institute of Unesp in Rio Claro.

The dean of UNESP, Herman Jacobus Cornelis Voorwald stressed the importance of the new center within the institution's participation in the efforts to develop science and technology, aimed at improving the quality of life, environmental conservation and overcoming social inequality.

The creation of Unespetro is one of the main initiatives for developing the System of Qualification, Science and Technology in Carbonates (SCTC).  This system is the result of an agreement signed in February between Petrobras, Unesp and the State University of Campinas - Universidade Estadual de Campinas (UNICAMP), the State University of North Fluminense - Universidade Estadual do Norte Fluminense (Uenf), the Fluminense Federal University - Federal Fluminense (UFF) and the Federal University of Rio de Janeiro - Universidade Federal do Rio de Janeiro (UFRJ).  The SCTC seeks to advance the knowledge of rocks still relatively little known to the industry and academia, especially in relation to the types occurring in the pre-salt.
