The economic crisis feels like old history in the port of Santos. The new record of operation of goods for a period of ten months - 69.6 million tons - with growth of 2.1% over the same period of last year, is the proof of the positive performance of the Santos terminal. For that, the exports have been having a widely significant behavior among the operated cargoes, since they were responsible for 73% of the operations, although the imports have been growing month after month this year.
In the period, the shipments amounted to 50.3 million tons, a 14.2% increase compared to 2008. The imports, on their turn, fell 20.4%, amounting to 18.7 million tons, compared to the first ten months of last year. The tendency of increase of the work was confirmed in October, with 7.7 million tons, growth of 6.2% compared to the same month the previous year. Compared to the same month of 2008, the exports grew 13% and the imports fell 6.1%.
The growth of standardized products, such as sugar (32.5% more or 14.2 million tons, in ten months), coffee beans and citrus pellets, have helped pull the flow of exports up and weigh in favor of the growth of the port operations in general. According to the monthly follow-up of Codesp, the port administrator, containers still show a retraction in the port operations, with a fall of 16.1%, to 1,854,666 TEUs during the period, but it already gives signs of improvement when the monthly numbers are analyzed.
A historic diversification of markets has been noticed by the port administrator, as a result of the new tendency of the Brazilian foreign trade. The exports to Asia, exclusive of the Middle East countries, have got to 15.7 million tons in the first ten months of 2009, 82% above last year's.
