The Brazilian retailing grew 10.3% in 2010 compared to data of the prior year, informed Serasa Experian, a credit analysis firm, yesterday. In December, according to the Serasa Experian Indicator of Commercial Activity, the growth achieved 2.9% compared to November, already discounted the seasonal influences.

The sector of construction material had the greatest growth last year, 17% compared to 2009. Then the sector furniture, electric devices and electronics and computer equipment, with growth of 14.9% in the same period. The segment of vehicles, motorcycles and parts presented an increase of 10.9%. Among the evaluated segments, there was a 0.4% retraction in fuels and lubricants.

In the assessment of the economists of Serasa Experian, the main reasons for the growth of the retail in 2010 were the offer of credit at favorable conditions, the high level of consumer confidence and the good moment lived by the labor market. In 2011, the economists of the institution expect positive growth of the commercial activity, but at more moderate rates.

According to Serasa Experian, the tightening credit measures issued by the Central Bank (BC) in early December, the forecasts of increase in the interest rates and the promises of the new Government of a more austere tax policy in 2011 will lead to a less accelerated growth of consumption.
