O Estado de S. Paulo

Brazil's competitiveness has just gained two positions in the world rankings elaborated annually by the Swiss Institute IMD. In it, the country went up to 38th place, in a list of 58 countries analyzed. The performance was mainly influenced by the assessing of the efficiency of the business and economic development, with strong job creation. The gains in competitiveness, however, were adversely affected by two other factors considered by the study, which are the infrastructure and the government efficiency. In the first area, the country lost three positions, taking the 49th place. The evaluation of the State remained the same: 52th place. Health and education also influenced against.

The World Competitiveness Yearbook 2010 was developed by the IMD in partnership with the Dom Cabral Foundation (FDC), from Minas Gerais.  It has been more than two decades since it was elaborated, the research analyzes the conditions offered by countries to do business.  In the previous report, Brazil had gained three positions. In a year that was still amidst a crisis, the U.S. lost, for the first time, the top of the list. Singapore swapped the third position with the U.S., taking the 1st place. Hong Kong remained in the second place.

In the analysis of the IMD, the resilience of the emerging markets during the crisis has ensured the good performance. In view of the problems of sovereign debt in Europe, it was registered an overall drop in the positions of European countries. The members of the Euro zone, Italy, Greece, Slovenia and Slovakia were behind Brazil, as well as South Africa, Mexico and Argentina. Among the BRICS, China led in the 18th position (it was in 20th in the last report); India fell one position to 31st; Russia fell two positions to the 51th place.
