Bike sales grow 26% in April

Valor Econômico – 05/11/2009

In the first month of exemption of the Cofins (Social Security Financing Contribution), the motorcycle industry presented growth of 26.2% in its sales compared to the result of March, amounting to 152 thousand units. The production, in relation to the previous month, also registered a 3.6% increase, and it ends the period with 130.9 thousand units manufactured in the country.

However, notwithstanding such data being better than that of the month of March, the results of production and sales in April are, respectively, 31.4% and 16.2% below those of the same period of 2008. The figures were disclosed Friday by the Brazilian Association of the Manufacturers of Motorcycles, Mopeds, Scooters, Bicycles and the like (Abraciclo). In an announcement, the president of the entity, Paulo Shuiti Takeushi, praised the measures adopted by the federal government, but he emphasized it is still early to celebrate a possible resumption.

The sales registered by the makers regard the volume sold to the dealerships, which is why the volume of licensing of vehicles disclosed by the National Federation of Distribution of Automotive Vehicles (Fenabrave) is not reflected in the data. That indicates the dealerships may be getting ready to sell more thanks to the reduction on the taxes. In this indicator, regarding the same period, the volume of licensing of motorcycles in the country retracted 9% compared to March, ending the month with 126.6 thousand units. Compared to April of last year, when 173.9 thousand units were licensed, the fall achieved 27.2%.
