Balance of São Paulo agribusiness grows 16%

The trade surplus of the agribusiness of São Paulo in the first quarter of 2010 was US$ 2.84 billion, an increase of 15.9% compared to the US$ 2.45 billion surplus registered between January and April 2009. The data is from the survey made by the Institute of Agricultural Economics (IEA-APTA), published yesterday by the Secretariat of Agriculture of the State of São Paulo. The exports of the agribusiness of São Paulo increased by 22.1% between January and April, when compared to the same period of 2009, from US$ 4.25 billion to US$ 5.19 billion. As regards the imports of agribusiness of São Paulo, they grew 30.6% when compared the same periods, from US$ 1.80 billion to US$ 2.35 billion.
The performance of the agribusiness in the first quarter continuer better than the registered throughout all the balance of trade of the State of São Paulo, which presented deficit of US$ 5.58 billion in the period. The agricultural sector increased the participation from 34.7% to 35.8% in all external sales of the State of São Paulo when compared to the first four months of 2009 and 2010. "Therefore, the performance of the agribusiness sustained the Brazilian balance of trade, since the other sectors, with exports of US$ 32.56 billion and imports of US$ 45.58 billion, produced in a US$ 13.02 billion deficit", say analysts of the IEA. The total exports of São Paulo between January and April amounted to US$ 14.49 billion. As for the imports, between January and April they were responsible for 11.7% of the US$ 20.07 billion operated.
