Valor Econômico - 08/29/2008

The Index that shows the Level of Activity (INA) that measures the performance of the transformation industry of São Paulo increased of 1.4% from June to July, taking into consideration the seasonal adjustments. The index is calculated by the Federation of Industries of the State of São Paulo (Fiesp) together with the Center of the Industries of the State of São Paulo (Ciesp). Without the seasonal adjustment, the increase in July was 2.8%. In the comparison with July/2007, the INA grew 9.4%. In 12 months, the index had an increase of 8.4%. In the accumulated in the year until July, the INA increased 8.9% compared to the same period of last year. The level of use of the installed capacity (Nuci) of the processing industry of São Paulo reached 84% in July, with the adjustment, above the level seen in the previous month, 83.7%. In July 2007, this percentage was 82.7%. Without the seasonal adjustment, Nuci ended July at 84.2%, with minor variation compared to the 84.1% registered one month before and above the level of 82.9% of July last year. The figures, however, are considered inaccurate even by Fiesp, which announced it is preparing a new version of the research on the use of the productive capacity of the plants of São Paulo. The director of the Department of Research and Economics Studies of the entity, Paulo Francini, informed the study should start being released in 2009. According to him, the difference lies on the fact that the real productive capacity of the industries is difficult to measure. In order to have an idea of the distortion, Francini estimates the real level of July would not exceed 70%. The use of the capacity is one of the variables that integrate the INA. Fiesp has also informed that the real sales of the industry of São Paulo have had an increase of 0.1% between June and July, without taking the seasonal adjustment into account. Compared to July last year, the sales went 11% up. In the accumulated from January to July, the sales grew 6.9% in the comparison with same period of 2007. The total of real salaries paid by the industries of São Paulo increased 2.6% in July, without the seasonal adjustment. In the comparison with the same month of 2007 there was an increase of 8.2%. In the accumulated of the first seven months of this year, the increase reached 4.9%.
