Valor Econômico – 11/27/2008

The city of São Paulo is in the 100th place in an environmental ranking made by the State, with 322 cities. The list was elaborated by the Environment Secretariat that, by means of questionnaires answered by the governments of the municipalities, graded their environmental agenda from zero to one hundred. The first place in the State was given to the tourist municipality of Santa Fé do Sul, with 30 thousand inhabitants, located in the Northeast of São Paulo. From the 645 municipalities of SP, 613 executed a commitment with the Município Verde (Green City) program, but only 332 have submitted their action plans for the environmental area. The first 44 received a certificate called Green Seal. The capital scored 63.26 points. Among the items analyzed are the projects of the city for the elimination of landfills, commitments and actions to treat 100% of the sewage, and selective garbage collection programs. One of the main problems pointed by the secretariat in the capital of the State regards the planting of trees in the city. The secretariat analyzed two items in this regard: planting plans and square meters planted per inhabitant in the city. Regarding the former, the city was graded 0; as for the latter, it got 5. The capital of the State was graded 10 in four items: sustainable housing, fighting and control of air pollution, environmental structure, and existence of a city council.
