Estado Agency - 10/03/2008

The Cosan Group opens today the works for the expansion of the Gasa thermoelectric unit in Andradina, in the West of the state of São Paulo, for which R$ 368 million (US$ 191.7 million) will be invested until 2010. The project foresees the expansion of the sugar of cane processing from 1.2 million to 2.7 million tons in this current harvest and 3.8 million tons in 2010. The alcohol production should leap, in the same period, from 58.6 million liters to 200.7 million liters up to 292.6 million liters. The sugar production should remain unchanged in 8 thousand 50-Kg bags. The Cosan Group has also purchased two high-pressure boilers for the co-generation of electric energy in the unit, which will raise the installed power from 4MW to 44 MW this harvest until reaching 78 MW in 2010. According to the company, the generated energy will be equivalent to the illumination of a 140-thousand-residence or 500-thousand-inhabitant city.
