Health and Life Sciences

Leader in the industry, the State of São Paulo is home to 38% of national bioscience companies, according to a survey conducted by Biominas Foundation (2011). The biotechnology center relies on the presence of an extensive network of universities and research institutions, as well as an important contingent of skilled labor.

Scientific research in São Paulo offers innovative solutions in search for healing and operates on various initiatives in the areas of molecular biology, medical biotechnology, pharmacology and medical devices. As the most populous State in Brazil, São Paulo has the largest market of healthcare products, providing investment opportunities in perfect conditions to bring new drugs and technical solutions from the lab to the market.

The high technology and the increase in life expectancy of the population converted the health and life sciences sector into a prosperous and profitable field of activity. Few industries are experiencing such intensive stimulus as the health and life sciences markets.

Biominas Foundation points out that there are 271 private bioscience companies in Brazil, 53% of which (143 companies) corresponds to biotechnology (technological application that uses living organisms, biological systems or processes) – (Biominas/PwC – 2011).

The set of biosciences and life sciences companies is broader than that of biotechnology, because it includes segments such as validation services of new drugs (preclinical and clinical tests) and the development of next-generation medical devices, which do not fall into the strict definition of biotechnology and has been witnessing an expansion of its strategic importance in Brazil.

In recognition of the importance represented by the progress that studies in the biotechnology field can bring to the quality of life of the population and to the economic and social development, companies and researchers in the sector take advantage of several credit facilities.

The São Paulo Research Foundation (Fapesp) offers credit facilities for technological innovation, including exclusive programs for the biotechnology, biodiversity and molecular biotechnology sectors: the Research Program in Characterization, Conservation and Sustainable Use of Biodiversity in the State (Biota-Fapesp), Fapesp Program for Research on Bioenergy (Bioen), and Fapesp Genoma Program.

At the federal level, among other credit facilities, we can mention the Biotechnology Sector Fund of the Financier of Studies and Projects (Finep), the Seed Capital programs (Criatec) and the support to the Development of the Healthcare Industrial Complex, both from the Bank of Economic and Social Development (BNDES).
